I’m getting more and more serious about my Philo1. Geez, I feel like I’m majoring a Philosophy course but in fact this philo subject is just a GE course, meaning its just needed to complete my units. Hahaha. But what the hell, I am having fun.
A while ago in class, we watched two shows. The first show is a Will and Grace episode where Grace was looking for an apartment to live in and the second one is a Filipino movie, Katas ng Saudi. Thought you should know that both shows are comedy. Later did we realize that this Will and Grace and Katas ng Saudi has something to do with our topic! We were asked to connect language to reality by our professor using the two shows we have watched. He explained to us that in a country like the Philippines, people can’t easily catch up with the jokes and sarcasm that American shows try to say. People don’t know when to laugh unless there is a signal like background laugh. He said that this is because we grew up in a different culture with a different language. Not like in a Filipino movie, we know when to laugh and when to not laugh because we understand everything because the language use is our very own language.
does language determine reality or does reality determine language?
yea, this is my assignment. i need your opinions.
and another question.
do you believe in truth’s existence?
and this is not my assignment. just curious.
visit carcrashedheart.org thanks!

I’m a bit confused with the questions coz they’re kinda vague for me sorry but I do feel that your prof’s right in terms of the language and culture differences we have with other people. It would be hard for us to understand some aspects of the Americans for examples despite the fact that we understand their language coz in the first place, our culture is different from theirs anyway.

actually, yeah. some people really don’t get the American humor, but i get it. probably coz we were raised in a western kind of environment. although what i don’t sometimes get is the British humor. haha :]
Philosophy really is an interesting subject. it makes you think. we have a prof in DLSU who makes somehow his students doubt the existence of God. he’s agnostic, so yeah. he has ridiculously good points. good thing he wasn’t my prof! haha

i agree…philosophy subject is so good…hwahaha…basta…asteg ang philosophy..
parang who am i? hehe..
hwoo

Wow, that sounds like such an interesting topic!
(Yeah, Americans are pretty sarcastic. xD I’m often sarcastic. :P)
I feel that reality determines language, because it’s what happens around us that inspires language — like the invention of the computer and the internet. Without those, our world would never have created words like “blog,” “e-mail,” “instant messenger,” etc.
I believe that truth definitely exists, it’s just a matter of relativity. What may be considered true by one person may not be the same for another.

i have to agree with lauren. that is a pretty good and interesting topic.
american’s really are sarcastic. minsan you can’t even tell if they’re joking or not.
i remembered something. me and my brother was watching a comedy show (when we first came here and when we didn’t know english that much yet). we didn’t really get the jokes but we just laughed when there’s a laughing background so we’ll look like we understand what we’re watching. lol. funny times.
the question is really hard. i don’t really know what to say.

Katas ng Saudi? May cameo don si Sheena diba? Hihi, idol ko talaga si Sheena!
XD
Hindi ko pa yun napapanuod… di ko alam kung saan.
Well, pag nanonood ako ng Norwegian films or shows, I know and understand what’s happening.. pero when they laugh, I’m like “what’s so funny about that?”
And when I tell my friends a joke, they throw back a am-I-to-laugh? face.
It’s just…. annoying. Pero sometimes, I can catch up naman and laugh. I’ve been here for more than a year, after all.
With English shows naman, almost the same, but since I speak almost fluently (thanks to the fact that I had to speak English the whole last year — and until now sometimes), and I always watch Hollywood films (ehhr, mom’s calling me, I’ll BRB) so ayon, natatawa na ako sa American jokes madalas.
Reality determines language. In the way na we can’t come up of a word without even seeing it in real life. You get me? I can’t think of how the language can determine reality…. so it must me the other way around. We cannot create something we cannot describe to ourselves — it’s so wrong. How about genes? cancer? They must have existed over billion years before geniuses discovered them, right? So as a conclusion, language does NOT determine reality. Reality determines language!
Hala, sorry for ranting so much. May nabasa na kasi ako tungkol sa topic na to.
